SAE J390 1999 Edition, May 1, 1999 (R) Dual Dimensioning Engineering Drawings
Quantity

Description / Abstract:

1. Scope--This document covers a dual dimensioning practice thatprovides both U.S. customary inch-pound units and SI metric units forall dimensions on the field of the drawing. The scope does not includethe various methods by which computer programs are used for dualdimensioning. In one method that has had some usage, drawings aredimensioned in SI (metric) units, with conversions to U.S. customaryinch-pound units provided in a computer-generated chart on the drawing.

1.1 Purpose--The purpose of this document is to provide anauthoritative guide for uniform application of dual dimensioning onengineering drawings. SAE recognizes that a decision regardingmeasurement units is an individual judgment based on needs andcircumstances. While providing this information, SAE takes no officialposition concerning dual dimensioning. Issuance of this publicationshould not be construed as advocacy.

1.2 General--Introduction--This document establishes a uniform methodof combining inch-pound units and metric units of measure on the sameengineering drawing. In this document "metric units" means theInternational System of Units (abbreviated SI) as described in SAE TSB003. Herein is guidance for converting from one system to the otherwhile maintaining functional interchangeability.
